The Wellsboro JV Team traveled to Cowanesque to face the Indians on Monday, just days after the Varsity team defeated them for Homecoming. Wellsboro jumped to an early 7-0 lead, when Garrett Stager caught a pass from Cameron Jones and launched a bullet over two Cowanesque defenders to Steve Mengee. The Hornets were held scoreless for the rest of the first half, as numerous penalties killed potential scoring opportunities.
The second half featured a struggle by both teams on both sides of the ball, as Wellsboro nor Cowanesque could produce much offensive yardage. The Hornets were able to find the end zone near the end of the third quarter, as Sean Gleason scored a touchdown on the left side of the Indian defensive front.
The Indians did not give up however, as they were able to recover a mishandled snap during a Wellsboro punt near the end zone. The Indians were then able to score again, but missed the two point conversion, bringing the score to 13-12 Wellsboro. The Hornets got the ball back with decent field position, but were unable to score with around one minute remaining in the game.
Cowanesque gained some momentum from the turnover, but was unable to cash in, as Matt Weaver intercepted a pass that sealed the one point victory for the Hornets with only a handful of time remaining in the game. With the win, the JV Team improves their record to 6-2. The JV Team will finish their season on the road next Monday at Wyalusing, with kickoff set for 7:00 pm.
