Cowanesque Valley downs Wellsboro, 42-6

The Cowanesque Valley Indians were in mid-season form Friday night, downing Wellsboro 42-6 in the football opener for both teams at Westfield.

The Indians amassed 404 yards of total offense, 215 yards rushing and 189 through the air to build up a 42-0 lead after three quarters. On defense, Cowanesque Valley held the Hornets to 217 total yards and only one score, that coming midway through the fourth period.

CV also had no turnovers, as compared to five for Wellsboro. Four Indians combined to do most of the damage offensively, quarterback Chris Adams, and running backs Tony Bruce, Tom Dexter, and Robert Mettler.

Adams, a senior co-captain, completed seven-of-10 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns. He also scored on a seven yard run to open the evening's scoring, and intercepted a pass on defense. Bruce caught four of Adam's seven passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. He also carried the ball six times for 35 and picked off a pass on defense.

Dexter was the evening's lone 100 yard rusher, finishing with 137 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. Mettler scored a pair of touchdowns, one on a 10 yard run (his only carry), and one on a 49 pass from Adams He finished with 89 receiving yards on only two catches.

Brett Huzey scored the only other Indian touchdown on an eightyard pass from Adams in the third quarter Dexter also kicked four extra points.

Chris Morral topped Wellsboro rushers, gaining 83 yards on 21 carries, including a 14 yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jon Cox ran for 55 yards on 10 totes.

Cox and Chad Watters shared the Hornet quarterbacking chores. Cox completed two-of-eight passes and Watters one-of-10.

Devin Montgomery caught one ball for 22 yards, Neil Bogaczyk one for 11 and Watters one for four yards.

Wellsboro's Phil Senters ran four times for 18 yards, Watters four rushes for 16 yards, and Pat Focht two carries for eight yards.

The Indians ran out lo a 14-0 lead ofter one quarter on scoring runs by Adams and Mettler and a pair of Dexter point after kicks.

Adams' 49 pass to Mettler was the only scoring of the second quarter as CV took a 20-0 lead into the half.

A 22 point outburst in the third period turned the game into a rout for the hosts. Dexter scored first on a five yard run, then Huzey caught an eight yard touchdown aerial, and Bruce hauled in a 22 yard scoring pass.

Morral's fourth quarter touchdown run for the Hornets closed out the scoring.

Cowanesque Valley visits Sayre on Friday, September 6 at 7:30 p.m. For their next contest, Wellsboro travels to Wyalusing to tackle the Rams, also at 7.30 p.m. Friday.
