Canton tops Wellsboro, 46-14

Canton got 34 points and 133 rushing yards from junior running back Matt Machmer, all in the first half, as the Warriors cruised to a 46-14 Northern Tier League football win over Wellsboro Saturday afternoon at Canton.

Machmer scored three touchdowns in the first half on runs of 28, three, and 60 yards. The Warriors also scored on a two yard run by Mark Morgan and a 39 yard pass from quarterback Boo Perry to Jason Collister.

Following a Brandon Ridall one yard touchdown run in the third quarter, Wellsboro got on the scoreboard on a 67 yard Chris Morral touchdown gallop. That made the score 40-6 after three peridods of play.

Shannon Terry raced 43 yards to paydirt in the final period to up the Canton lead to 46-6.

The final score of the day came on a five yard scoring strike from Hornet quarterback Chad Watters to Bryan Signor, a two-point conversion pass from Watters to Devin Montgomery made the final count 46-14.

The Warriors finished with 367 yards of total offense, including 288 on the ground, without committing a turnover.

The 8-0 Canton defense was tough, too, limiting Wellsboro to four first downs and 140 yards in total offense.

The Hornets, now 0-9, host Coudersport this Saturday evening, November 2 at 7:30 p.m.
