Athens dumps Wellsboro, 46-0

John Belles ran for 114 yards and a touchdown while the Athens defense came up with six turnovers as the Bulldogs defeated Wellsboro 46-0 in Northern Tier League football action Friday night at Wellsboro.

Belles scored on a 17 yard run in the first quarter to open the game's scoring.

Following Belles into the end zone in the second period were Chris Jones on a 38 yard pass from Athens quarterback Jason Warden and Warden on a three yard keeper. That made the score 19-0 at the half.

20 third quarter points on three touchdowns turned the game into a rout. Todd Husick scored first on a two yard blast, Erik Larson was next on an 11 yard run with a Wellsboro fumble, then Travis Soprano caught a seven yard touchdown pass from Warden.

The lone score in the fourth quarter came on a four yard interception return by Athens' Joel Ross.

The Hornets fumbled eight times losing five of them, and were intercepted once.

Running back Chris Morral ran well for Wellsboro, gaining 72 yards on 17 carries. Erick Crawford netted 47 yards on 12 totes for the Hornets.

Robbie Tallman and Morral each caught a Chad Watters pass, Tallman for 11 yards and Morral for four.

The win was the first for 1-5 Athens this season Wellsboro falls to 0-6. Wellsboro's next game is set for this Saturday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Columbia Montour Vo-Tech.
