The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team swept the season series with Liberty, but struggled in their 49-26 win on Saturday, January 23.
Liberty led early but Wellsboro eventually took the lead, but struggled all afternoon shooting. The Hornets led 10-5 after the first quarter, and kept that five point gap at halftime as Tyler Boyer hit two long distance three pointers during the second quarter. Wellsboro opened up their 20-15 lead slightly in the third quarter, but only managed eight points as they continued to struggle.
The Hornets then went on a run in the fourth quarter as junior Jacob Singer scored 11 of the team's 21 points in the quarter to give the Hornets the win.
Singer finished the game with 16 points, sophomore Nic Ingerick finished with 10, and sophomore Quinn Henry had seven points and five steals. Sophomore Collin Pietropola had six points and five rebounds, senior Dawson Prough scored four points and grabbed eight rebounds, and juniors Brandon Lamphier and Alden Weiner and freshman Andrew Brelo all scored two points.
the JV team remained undefeated with a 54-7 win. Freshmen Holden Kennedy and Brandyn Tuttle each scored 15 points and Pietropola finished with 13.
The win improves the Hornets' record to 11-6 and qualifies them for District IV playoffs. The team will be back in action on Tuesday, January 26 as they host Wyalusing.
