The Wellsboro Middle School Boys Basketball team finished the 2014 season with a 28-17 win over Liberty on Wednesday, April 8.
The Hornets held a slim 6-4 lead after the first quarter, but increased that lead to 16-8 at the half, and 20-11 by the end of the third quarter. Wellsboro's offense was slowed down by Liberty as the Hornets tried too much one-on-one instead of passing the ball to break down Liberty's zone. The Hornets held on in the final frame as they outscored Liberty 8-6.
Andrew Brelo was the leading scorer with nine points, Taynton Repard had four, and Nate Redell, Ben Barnett, and Bergen Weiner each scored three points. Tanner Button and Brandyn Tuttle scored two points each, while Billy Lechler and Isaac Bechtel each added a point.
The B team also won, 27-23 to end their season on a high note. After trailing 4-2 in the first quarter, the Hornets fought back to take a 11-10 lead at the half, and then continued to fight until the final buzzer sounded.
Zach Busch and Wyatt Bahr both led the B team with six points, while Adam Osborn and Lechler pitched in four each.
"The boys worked hard all season," said head coach Ed Hamm. "They are great bunch of kids, and were an absolute joy to coach. I want to wish good luck to the eighth graders that are moving on to the next level. It will be fun watching them compete in high school."
The Hornets finish the season with a record of 16-5.
