The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team clinched a berth in District IV playoffs with a 55-45 win over Liberty on Wednesday, January 21.
Liberty led 14-9 after the first quarter, but Wellsboro rebounded after a slow start to outscore Liberty 17-9 to take a 26-23 lead at halftime. Liberty was able to hold the Hornets to 11 third quarter points before they exploded for 18 in the final quarter to claim the win.
Senior Kieron Smethers led the team with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Senior Michael Pietropola added 19 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Brandon Lamphier finished with nine points, Senior Jake Mitchell had three, and Junior Dawson Prough and Freshman Quinn Henry had two points each.
Wellsboro won the JV game 48-25 to improve to 9-4 on the year. Sophomore Jacob Singer led the way with 12 points, while Henry and Freshman Nic Ingerick had nine points each.
With the win, the Varsity team improves to 11-3 (3-1 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Friday, January 23 as they host Athens.
