The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team completed the season sweep of Wyalusing with a 42-37 win on Friday, January 30.
Wellsboro, who was without leading scorer Michael Pietropola for the game, jumped out to an early 11-2 lead and held an 18-7 lead after the end of the first quarter. Wellsboro would lead 22-15 at halftime after only managing to score four points in the second quarter.
The Hornets would hold on for the win, despite being outscored 14-10 in the fourth quarter.
Senior Kieron Smethers led the Hornets with 18 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks, and Senior Jake Mitchell scored a season-high 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Freshman Quinn Henry had five points in the win, Junior Dawson Prough had four, and Sophomore Brandon Lamphier had two points.
Wellsboro won the JV game 54-52 in OT. Freshman Collin Pietropola had 17 and Freshman Dalton Prough had 16 to improve the Hornets' record to 11-5.
With the Varsity win, the Hornets improve to 14-4 (6-1 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Monday, February 2 as they travel to Troy.
