The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team finished the 2014 regular season with a 44-42 win over South Williamsport on Senior Night.
Head coach Todd Outman was also recognized before the home crowd for earning his 100th win the game before against Mansfield. The Hornets started out the afternoon game by holding a slim, 10-9 lead after the first quarter, but outscored South 15-11 in the second quarter to take a 25-20 lead at halftime.
South Williamsport outscored Wellsboro 11-9 in the third quarter to trail 34-31 entering the final frame. Wellsboro started the quarter with four quick points as Sophomore Brandon Lamphier scored on two break-away layups. Wellsboro would push the lead to 10 points with over five minutes remaining in the game, but South Williamsport turned up the heat, and eventually battled back to trail 42-40 with just over a minute left.
South tried to tie the game up with under 30 seconds left, but Senior Kieron Smethers collected a missed South shot and pushed the ball up the court to Senior Michael Pietropola for the game winner.
Pietropola led the Hornets with 19 points and eight rebounds. Junior Dawson Prough finished with nine points, Lamphier had seven, Smethers scored five and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Senior Jake Mitchell had four.
The Hornets also won the JV game by the final of 38-28. Freshman Quinn Henry led the team with 10 points, and Freshmen Dalton Prough and Collin Pietropola scored nine points each.
The JV team finishes the 2014 season with a 13-7 record. The Varsity team ends the regular season at 17-5 and will await their seeding for District IV playoffs.
