Smith, Bryant Combine For Four Goals To Lead Lady Hornets Past Towanda

Sophomore Haylie Smith and junior Kate Bryant combined on four goals to lead the Wellsboro Girls Soccer team to a 4-1 win over Towanda on Tuesday night.

The Lady Hornets opened the scoring not even eight minutes into the contest as Bryant sent a corner kick that Smith cleaned up. 16 minutes later Smith converted a penalty kick opportunity to make it a 2-0 game before Bryant sent a goal past the Towanda keeper with one second remaining in the opening half.

Towanda's Elli Cook put the Lady Knights on the scoreboard with 27 minutes remaining. Shortly after that goal, Bryant and Smith connected again on a PK with 25:40 to go.

"I thought we moved the ball extremely well through the midfield and did a great job creating pressure," head coach Michael Reese said. "Kate delivered two beautiful corners that Haylie finished with headers, then Kate found the back of the net at the very end of the first half. I was proud of the effort from the entire group. We played with confidence, continued to work for each other and were able to get everyone meaningful minutes, which is important to us. It was a really good team effort from start to finish."

Wellsboro took 13 shots to the Lady Knights' 4 and had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior Jadyn Dunlap made two saves and sophomore Olive Twoey had one.

Wellsboro improves to 7-2-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the NTL. The team in back on the field against Northeast Bradford on Thursday.
