Junior Max Mascho threw a two-hit, 5-inning 10-0 shutout against NTL foe Troy on Wednesday afternoon.
Mascho struck out six and walked two.
"Quality pitching and solid defense is typically the recipe for success and we were fortunate to get both tonight," head coach Kyle Smith said. "It was great to get another game in and playing on our home field is always nice. We have a lot of games to play in the next few weeks so this was a good way to start."
Wellsboro's offense found its groove early as senior Marek Mascho scored sophomore Griffin Morral on a double to center to put the Hornets on the scoreboard 1st. Sophomore Gabe Cuneo scored to make it 2-0 on a passed ball, then Mascho and junior Coen Tennis scored on a base hit to right field from senior Cameron Owlett, making it 4-0.
The Hornets added three more runs in the 2nd. Sophomore Reed Richardson led off the inning with a double to right, followed by a walk from Morral. Both would score. Richardson crossed home plate two at bats later with Cuneo at bat on a passed ball. After back-to-back walks Morral scored to push the lead to 6-0, then Max Mascho scored as Owlett drew a bases-loaded walk, making it 7-0 in favor of Wellsboro.
Tennis scored later in the 4th, after reaching base on an error to lead off the inning, on a fly ball from freshman Gage Baltzley. One inning later the Hornets closed out the game as Max Mascho singled to drive in Cuneo after he drew a walk. Max Mascho later scored on an Owlett single.
Wellsboro produced six hits in the game, led by Marek Mascho. He went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored 3 runs. Owlett also finished 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs. Max Mascho finished 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs and Richardson was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Morral, Cuneo and Tennis all scored twice.
Max Mascho pitched a complete game to earn the win for the Hornets.
Reed Palmer suffered the loss for the Trojans, allowing 7 runs (5 earned) on 3 hits with 6 walks and 3 strikeouts in 1 and 1/3 innings of work.
Mason Smith and Brendan Gilliland had Troy's two hits.
Wellsboro (2-1, 2-0 NTL Large School Division) is at Sayre later today.
