Senior Marek Mascho drove in five runs while hitting 4-of-6 at the plate to lead the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team to a 23-5 win over rival North Penn-Mansfield in 5 innings on Tuesday.
Mascho doubled in the fifth scoring two, singled in the first to score one, singled in the second to score another solo run, and double in the third inning to score one. Mascho also scored three times on the day.
The Hornets got off to a fast start as sophomore Griffin Morral led off the game with a double, and advanced to third on the throw, before Mascho drove him in. A double from junior Coen Tennis scored Mascho to make it a 2-0 game before Tennis later scored on a line drive single from junior Max Mascho to push the lead to 3-0.
The Tigers got 2 runs back in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead down to a run, however the Hornets added another run in the top of the 2nd. Sophomore Reed Richardson scored on a Marek Mascho single to left after drawing a lead off walk.
North Penn-Mansfield matched Wellsboro's run with one of their own in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the Hornets' lead down to 4-2. Wellsboro struck again in the top of the 3rd, this time, however, with 7 runs to put the game firmly in their control.
Senior Cameron Owlett, freshman Gage Baltzley, Richardson, Morral, Max Mascho, Tennis and sophomore Kody Enck all scored in the 3rd to increase Wellsboro's lead to 11-3. Morral later scored again in the 4th to make it 12-3 before the Tigers added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, making it 12-5.
Then in the 5th Wellsboro's offense exploded for 11 runs to end the game. Owlett, junior Syler Pietrzyk, Richardson, Marek Mascho, senior Jacob Heckman, Max Mascho and junior Izaya Campbell all crossed home plate in the inning.
Wellsboro out hit the Tigers 17-7. Max Mascho earned the win on the mound in 4 innings of work. He faced 23 batters, threw 77 pitches and allowed 5 runs (all earned) on 7 hits with 4 walks and 7 strikeouts. Pietrzyk threw the final inning, striking out two and walking one.
Andy Hermansen went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs and drew a walk to lead the Tigers. Jason Harer was on the losing end from the pitchers mound, allowing 6 runs on 6 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts in just two innings.
Wellsboro (1-0, 1-0 NTL Large School Division) is back in action Saturday morning for a non-league game at Jersey Shore.
