Athens - The old saying goes is it's hard to beat a team three times in one season. For the Wellsboro Volleyball team, it was anything but.
Following a 3-0 sweep of Wyalusing in the Class 3A championship game, the Lady Hornets are queens of District IV Volleyball once again. It is the team's 2nd win in three and the 10th overall in program history.
"The girls worked so hard to get to this point all year round and I couldn't be more proud of them," head coach Darci Pollock said. "We've talked a lot lately how defense wins championships, and we've put a lot of that into it the past two years."
Wellsboro took the first set 25-8 to set the tone. After some back-and-forth play at the net early on, the Lady Hornets went on a 12-2 run to take an 18-7 lead over the Lady Rams before finishing the set on a 7-1 scoring run, led primarily by senior Ellie Largey.
The second set, which the Lady Hornets won, 25-13, started the similar fashion to the first set. Leading 11-9, Wellsboro put together a 14-4 run, capped by three straight serving aces from junior Kendall Sweet.
The third set started a little rough for Wellsboro. A couple of unforced errors and some well-placed shots by Wyalusing found the Lady Hornets trailing 7-1 until a kill from junior Peyton Keane righted the ship. Junior Adelyn Frantz then took over from the serving line, rattling off 13 straight points and scoring 5 aces to put Wellsboro in front, 15-7.
"We really picked up the momentum there," continued Pollock on Frantz's scoring run. "I just couldn't be more happy about tonight."
The Lady Hornets would take the set, 25-16, and the match, on a long serve from Wyalusing.
Frantz led the Lady Hornets with 15 points and 5 aces while Sweet finished with 12 points (5 aces). Largey added 8 points (2 aces) from the serving line to go along with 16 assists and 4 digs.
Keane finished with 13 kills and 5 digs on the night, senior Madison Cruttenden made 7 digs, and junior Jillian Mickey had 11 assists.
Frantz also added 3 kills, and both her and sophomore Gena Fleming had a block.
Wellsboro (19-3) will now take on the District XI runner up at home on Tuesday.
