The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team got out of the gate quickly, and fought off a 5th inning rally by South Williamsport, to hold on for a 4-3 win in non-league action Saturday afternoon.
The win was the Hornets' 8th in a row.
"Max was dominant on the mound today, so we were happy to see him go the distance," head coach Kyle Smith said. "It was a well played baseball game by two good teams. We were happy to be able to make the early runs hold up."
Sophomore Griffin Morral led off the bottom of the 1st with a walk then later scored on a single to left from junior Coen Tennis. Senior Marek Mascho also singled in the inning and scored on a base knock to center from senior Cameron Owlett, giving the Hornets a 2-0 lead.
Later in the 2nd sophomore Gabe Cuneo tripled, preceded by a base hit from Morral, to score Morral. Marek Mascho then scored Cuneo on a line drive to center to make it 4-0.
Wellsboro held on to their 4-0 lead until the top of the 5th when the Mounties' bats came alive. South Williamsport got a pair of runners aboard, one on a walk and the other due to error, before a Marc Molina double to get them on the scoreboard. A Cade Lusk single to center scored two more runs, cutting the lead down to 4-3, before junior Max Mascho got Trace Wertz to fly out to Morral in center.
Max Mascho and the Hornet defense then six of the remaining 8 Mountie batters to hang on for the win.
Max Mascho scattered 4 hits on the day while striking out 11 and walking one in 7 innings of work. Chance Quimby allowed 4 runs in 6 innings, striking out five and walking two.
Marek Mascho and Coen Tennis both finished 2-for-3 to lead Wellsboro at the plate while Morral, Cuneo, and Owlett made up the remaining 7 hits for the Hornets.
Wellsboro (12-2, 10-1 NTL Large School Division) travels to Williamson on Tuesday.
