Hornets Knock Off Defending 3A Champ Troy, 68-63

Junior Colin Fletcher and senior Luke Rothermel combined for 45 points as the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team edged the defending PIAA District IV Class 3A champion Troy Trojans on the road Tuesday evening.

The win also ends a five-game losing streak to the Trojans.

"Great team effort tonight. We needed everyone to counter the night Trey had," commented head coach Ron Doughtie. "We really toughed out the end of the game. Really proud of the way we stuck together for the win."

The Hornets' offense came out firing on all cylinders and produced a 21-point first quarter behind 11 points from Fletcher. They led Troy 21-10, however the Trojans closed the gap down to 39-34 heading into the half thanks to a 24-18 2nd quarter.

Troy's offense picked up where they left off in the 2nd half with another 20-point quarter, while holding the Hornets to 11 points to rally and take the lead at 54-50 heading into the final frame.

The Hornets' defense tightened down in the 4th, holding Troy to just 9 points. On the offensive side of the court Wellsboro scored 18 points, highlighted by 6 points from Rothermel.

Fletcher finished with 24 to lead the Hornets while Rothermel added 21 points. The duo combined to shoot 6-for-8 from the foul line.

Sophomore Griffin Morral added 8 points while seniors Jonathan Carl and Marek Mascho and sophomore Ransom Schultz all scored 4 points each. Junior Gideon Lawton rounded out the scoring with 3 points.

Rothermel added 8 rebounds and 3 assists, Carl grabbed 6 boards and blocked 2 shots, Schultz added 7 rebounds, and Mascho and Morral made 3 assists each. Mascho also came up with 4 steals.

Trey Teribury led all scorers with 36 points. He hit five shots from behind the three-point arch and went 9-for-9 from the foul line.

Wellsboro's JV team maintained their perfect record (11-0) after a 44-21 win. Sophomore RJ Doughtie had 10 points and brother, freshman James Doughtie, added 8 points.

The Hornets improve their record to 6-5 (5-2 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action against Athens on Thursday.
