The Wellsboro and Athens Varsity Baseball teams took part in a rare Sunday evening game at neutral location PNC Field, home of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, that saw the Wildcats come home with a 6-1 win over the Hornets.
The loss also ended the Hornets' three-game win streak.
"Tonight was a great experience for our team," commented head coach Kyle Smith. "We got outplayed in a few areas and it cost us. It will help us learn and adapt moving forward. Their pitcher kept us off balance and they played good defense, they were better than us today."
Wellsboro took the lead early as junior Coen Tennis singled to center field to score senior Marek Mascho. Mascho, one at bat earlier, doubled to left field with two outs.
The Wildcats scored twice in the 3rd to take a 2-1 lead, then poured on 4 late runs in the 6th, to go on to the win.
Wellsboro had 5 hits in the game, as both Mascho and Tennis finished 2-for-3 at the plate. The remaining hit came from sophomore Reed Richardson.
Junior Max Mascho took the loss, going 5 and 1/3 innings. He allowed 6 runs (4 earned) on 3 hits to go with 3 walks and 11 strikeouts. Sophomore Gabe Cuneo threw the final third of an inning, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Wellsboro (4-2, 4-1 NTL Large School Division) travels to Troy on Tuesday.
