Hornets Edge Wyalusing After 20-Point 4th Quarter

Wellsboro put together a 20-point 4th quarter to rally past Wyalusing Tuesday night, erasing a nine-point deficit to edge the Rams, 53-51.

"We gutted out a tough win tonight," said head coach Ron Doughtie. "Once again we dug ourselves a hole with a lot of mistakes early and a lack of focus. Our defense and some big shots late in the game bailed us out, but the early game effort needs to improve."

The Hornets found themselves trailing 17-11 after the opening quarter and were outscored 10-6 in the 2nd to trail 27-17 at the half.

Wellsboro's offense finally kicked into gear after the intermission as they outscored the Rams 16-15 to cut the lead under double-digits to nine points. The Hornets then put together a 20-point 4th quarter, and held the Rams to 9 points, to eek out the win.

Senior Luke Rothermel and junior Colin Fletcher both finished in double-digits to lead the team. Rothermel dropped 19 while Fletcher added 17. Rothermel led all scorers in the game.

Senior Marek Mascho added 6 points, senior Jonathan Carl finished with 5, sophomore Ransom Schultz chipped in 4 and junior Gideon Lawton rounded things out with 2 points.

Rothermel pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double to go along with 4 assists, Schultz had 7 boards, sophomore Griffin Morral had 4 rebounds and 2 steals, and Mascho had 3 steals and 2 assists. Carl and Fletcher also grabbed 3 boards apiece.

Myles Kershner (18) and Tyler Caplan (16) led Wyalusing on the night.

Wellsboro started out the evening with a 48-28 win in the JV game, keeping their record perfect at 9-0. Freshmen James Doughtie and Braylen Jessup both scored 9 points to lead Wellsboro while sophomore Kody Enck added 8.

The win improves the Hornets to 5-4 (4-1 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action tomorrow night at Towanda.
