The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team rebounded from their loss Sunday to Athens by sweeping the season series with Troy, 8-4 in six innings, Tuesday afternoon before rain stopped the game.
"We played a complete ballgame today against a determined Troy team," head coach Kyle Smith said. "It was the kind of win we needed as a group and it was a nice bounce back effort from the tough loss against Athens. Pitching, defense and timely hits carried us today and that proved to be the difference. We had a number of guys step up today and contribute in positive ways!"
The Hornets started strong out of the gate with a pair of runs in the 1st as junior Coen Tennis hit a two-run home run to left following a walk by freshman Gabe Cuneo. Troy scored once in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead in half, but the Hornets' offense kept firing in the 2nd and 3rd.
Following a two-out walk by freshman Gage Baltzley, sophomore Griffin Morral drove him in the next at bat on a single to left field to make it 3-1. Wellsboro added to their lead in the fourth on a single to center by sophomore Reed Richardson, scoring junior Max Mascho.
A three-run 3rd inning by the Trojans tied the game up at 4-all, but the Hornets dug in and mounted a comeback of their own. With two outs senior Marek Mascho grounded out to short to score Baltzley, who led off the inning with a walk. Wellsboro added to their lead later in the 6th, with three more runs. A Cuneo single scored Morral and Baltzley, both of whom drew walks earlier in the inning. Following a base hit by Marek Mascho, Tennis singled to left, scoring Marek, for the Hornets' final run.
Both teams had seven hits apiece. The Hornets were lead by Tennis, who finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and 3 RBIs. Morral, Cuneo, Marek Mascho, Max Mascho and Richardson made up the remaining five of seven hits. Cuneo drove in 2 runs while Morral, Marek Mascho and Richardson all drove in single runs.
Baltzley went the distance on the mound for the Hornets, scattering 7 hits while allowing 4 runs (3 earned) with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.
Reed Palmer and Logan Loxley both went 2-for-3 at the plate with Loxley driving in 3 runs for the Trojans. Frank Harper was credited with the loss, pitching 4 innings and allowing 5 runs (all earned) with 6 walks and 6 strikeouts. Palmer finished the game, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.
Wellsboro improves to 5-2 (5-1 NTL Large School Division). The team hosts rival North Penn-Mansfield Thursday.
