The top-seeded Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team opened the District IV Class 3A playoffs with an 11-1 win in 5 innings over #8 seeded Bloomsburg Tuesday afternoon.

The Hornets jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the 1st as sophomore Griffin Morral led off with a single and later scored on a line drive to right by senior Marek Mascho. A double from sophomore Reed Richardson in the bottom of the 3rd scored senior Cameron Owlett and freshman Gage Baltzley to make it 3-0. Owlett led off the innings with a single to right and Baltzley drew a walk.

Wellsboro had their biggest inning in the bottom of the 3rd as they plated 5 runs. With two outs and one on, sophomore Kody Enck delivered a single to center to score Baltzley, then scored the next at bat on a Richardson single to center, making it 5-0. After Richardson's single Morral and sophomore Gabe Cuneo drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Richardson, Morral and Cuneo all scored as Mascho reached base on error, pushing Wellsboro's lead to 8-0.

Another Enck single in the bottom of the 4th scored Baltzley, who singled to center the previous at bat, to increase the lead to 9-0.

Bloomsburg scored their lone run in the top of the 5th before the Hornets closed the game out in the bottom half of the inning.

Cuneo led off an reached on an error and advanced to 2nd. Mascho singled one at bat later to move Cuneo to 3rd, then both scored the next at bat on a double from junior Coen Tennis.

Wellsboro had 11 hits on the day, led by a 3-for-4 plate performance from Mascho. He also scored a run and drove one in. Enck and Richardson both went 2-for-3 with Richardson driving in 3 runs and Enck 2. Morral (1-for-3), Tennis (1-for-4), Owlett (1-for-3) and Baltzley (1-for-3) made up the remaining hits.

Morral, Cuneo, Owlett and Baltzley all scored twice while Mascho, Enck and Richardson crossed home plate once.

Junior Max Mascho got the win on the mound, pitching a complete game. He allowed one run on 5 hits with a walk and 9 strikeouts.

"Really good team win to open up the district playoffs," said head coach Kyle Smith. "Max was confident as usual and we had contributions throughout the lineup. It was great to see the school and community support today as well. The players and team appreciate the positive energy surrounding the program!"

The Hornets (18-2, 14-1 NTL Large School Division) will be back in action on Friday afternoon, as they take on #4 seed Warrior Run at Mansfield University at 4:30 p.m.
