Junior Piper Hoprich successfully defended her 100m and 200m titles on day two of the District IV Track & Field Championships, while seniors Jonathan Carl, David Seeling and Henry Whitney, junior Lauren Kosek, and the Lady Hornets' 4x100m relay team punched their tickets to next weekend's PIAA Championships at Milton on Saturday.
After qualifying for the 100m on Thursday, Hoprich posted a 12.17 in the 100m finals, beating 2nd place by nearly half a second.
"I feel really good," said Hoprich after her 100. "It's a really nice day and I had good competition. My start is my weaker point right now but my top-end speed carries me through my race."
Less than an hour later Hoprich anchored the 4x100m relay team, joining senior Sophia Yoder, sophomore Luna Moyer and freshman Paige Rush, to bring home a 3rd place finish (49.94) to qualify on time for the event.
"We are so overjoyed," said Moyer. "Everyone did amazing today. We were focused on breaking 49 today and we accomplished that."
"I'm super excited with our PR," added Hoprich. "It's great to break 50 and to be competitive with those girls."
"I'm really excited," Rush said. "Our hand offs were really good."
"I'm super proud of this PR and super proud of these girls," commented Yoder. "We've put in a lot of work and its led to where we are now."
Then in the afternoon Hoprich won her second gold of the day, running a 25.22 in the 200m. She took the lead midway through the corner then blew away the field in the final 100 meters.
"I tried to get out hard and maintain that throughout the race. I usually get out better in the 200, I don't know why."
After Hoprich won her 100m final, Kosek clocked in a time of 5:00.04 in the 1600m to bring home her 2nd silver medal of the weekend. Kosek was back on the track in the middle of the afternoon for the 800m, where she finished 4th in 2:22.18.
After Kosek's first run on the track, Henry Whitney took his turn in the 1600m and brought home a 6th place finish in 4:24.63 to qualify on time.
Carl ran 49.56 from the 6th lane to win the 400m about an hour after Whitney got off the track. His gold-medal winning run was also a new school record in the event.
"I feel great. All the hard work the whole season came down to this," he said. "I've been trying to go sub-50 for four years now, so coming out of lane six and winning a district championship is really cool and means a lot to me. I couldn't have accomplished this without my coaches and mentors."
While all of this was taking place on the track, Seeling was on the high jump mat. He cleared his first two jumps of 5-ft, 9-inches and 5-ft, 11-inches on the first try, cleared 6-ft, 1-inch on the 2nd attempt, hit 6-ft, 3-inches also on attempt #2, then missed all three jumps at 6-ft, 5-inches to take 3rd.
For the girls, Moyer finished 5th in the 100m (13.01) and 7th in the 200m (27.35), Yoder was 14th in the 200m (27.96), sophomore Isla Twoey finished 6th in the 300m hurdles (48.27) with sophomore Piper Perry (52.95) finishing 22nd, senior Kristina Belz placed 12th in the high jump (4-ft, 8) and 14th in the triple jump (32-ft, 8), Twoey took 7th in the triple jump (34-ft, 4.5), and sophomore Lauren Gehman was 17th in the triple jump (30-ft, 10.75).
In the boys meet, sophomore Brayden Benjamin took 7th in the 110m hurdles (16.79), Carl was 20th in the 200m (24.57), senior Aaron Kirk was 20th in the 400m (55.05), senior Jude Cuneo finished 7th in the 800m (1:59.97), and senior Max Macias finished 20th in the 1600m (4:47.66).
The Lady Hornets finished 13th in the 4x400m relay (4:27.51) while the boys' team took 12th (3:41.98) in the event and finished 9th in the 4x100m relay (45.43).
On the team side the Lady Hornets finished 3rd overall with 60 points while the Hornets tied for 10th with Wyalusing with 30 points.
"Districts was a success for us! To my surprise, we ended up in third place as a team," said girls head coach Elizabeth Hoover. "This accomplishment shows all the hard work and dedication these athletes have put toward their events this season. It's not over yet, however. We are moving on to the state championship next weekend in five events. I'm excited to see what they do in their final races of the year."
"We are so proud of all of our boys who competed in the district level," added boys head coach Brigette Largey. "We had some athletes who exceeded their expectations in their events and others who came really close. No matter what the final results were, they all worked extremely hard to get there. Overall, we are impressed by our boys team as we have athletes that switched from some relays to other events - without complaining, athletes who came for both days of district as alternates- without a complaint, and a team that supported each other in both the disappointing moments and the successful ones. We are excited for those athletes who are continuing on the states and can't wait to see them for at the next level."
