Senior Rowan Butters signed to continue her tennis career next fall, while studying management and psychology, at Susquehanna University back on April 17.
In May of her junior year Butters scheduled a visit to Susquehanna and wanted to meet with the tennis coach.
"He was super nice and an interesting guy," said Butters. "He's looking for tennis players 24-7 so he was excited that I was interested. From there we had phone conversations and I met with hi a few more times before deciding Susquehanna was the right school. I then decided that tennis was something I wanted to continue and I knew that I could do that at Susquehanna.
Butters was also accepted into Penn State's Smeal College of Business and Binghamton University' School of Management.
"Both Binghamton and Penn State are very expensive and ultimately have different campus vibes from Susquehanna. The environment, the small campus feel, it's just really beautiful. You have the outside strip part, but also the malls and stuff like that. It really is the best of both worlds in terms of resources. It reminds me of home but it's also close to some bigger areas like Hershey and Harrisburg, which excites me for internship opportunities. The community as a whole is just great."
Butters did her homework on the whole process too before making her final decision.
"I sat in on a few business classes that Susquehanna offers and met both of the management professors, a finance professor and a couple of the financial analytics professors. I also met with their admissions counselors to talk through all of my thoughts, the application process, and how to pick the right school. That was great because while the love Susquehanna they weren't biased towards it. I also met with and had lunch of some students and members of the team I wanted to know what I was signing up for."
Butters didn't start playing tennis until her junior year and has focused on playing doubles.
"I played basketball and did track my freshman year and I just did track as a sophomore. I missed have a second sport, and had friends on the tennis team, so I decided to play tennis. Both of my parents also played in high school. So I just signed up and went for it. I ended up having a lot of fun. Coach (Andy) Borzok was a great coach my junior year and Coach (Spencer) Kreisler took over my senior year. We had a great season and won the NTL. It was a super exciting season and through tennis I made of lot of my best friends and made my junior and senior years a lot better. I love playing the game."
For first-year head coach Spencer Kreisler, Butters is his first team member to play collegiality.
"It's pretty cool since this was my first year as head coach. Rowan has the skills to go play in college and I'm glad she's deciding to continue to stick with tennis after high school," he said. "It makes you feel like you've accomplished something as a coach. She really helped me out a lot as a first-year head coach, she helped control practices and I could hand off underclassman to her to help them with drills and whatever I needed. She's a really strong doubles player, she has a great serve, and I'm excited to see what a college-level coach will be able to help her with instead of just me and the ball machine at practice."
