The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team suffered a 10-run, 12-2 loss in 5 innings to NTL Large School Division foe Troy in their season-opener on Wednesday, March 19.
"I thought we played with a great deal of confidence early in the game and our pitching and defense kept it close," head coach Kyle Smith said. "However, Troy is an experienced team that played with more confidence than we did tonight as the game moved along and we seemed to fall short in that area. It;s a long season and we will get back at it tomorrow at Mansfield."
Wellsboro took the early lead in the top of the 2nd as senior Gabe Sprouse crossed home plate after freshman Gabe Cuneo drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Troy took the lead with a 4-run 3rd inning, then later added 6 runs in the bottom of the 4th to push the lead to 10-1.
Wellsboro added one more run in the top of the 5th. After a double by sophomore Coen Tennis with one out, sophomore Syler Pietrzyk came on as a courtesy runner. Pietrzyk scored as senior Ryder Bowen reached on an error. Troy then added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to enact the 10-run rule.
The Hornets had just 4 hits in the game, two by Sprouse, and one each by Tennis and junior Cameron Owlett. Junior Marek Mascho started on the mound and threw 2 & 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks. Senior Dustin Owlett and junior Dylan Copp each threw 2/3 innings. Owlett allowed 3 runs on 3 hits with a strikeout while Copp allowed 5 runs on 3 hits with 2 walks.
The Trojans compiled 11 hits on the afternoon, led by Lincoln Chimics and Brendan Gilliland (3-for-4). Reed Palmer got the win on the mound in 4 innings of work, allowing just the one run on 3 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.
Wellsboro (0-1, 0-1 NTL Large School Division) travels to rival North Penn-Mansfield this afternoon.
