Sophomore Max Mascho threw a two-hit complete game to help the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team shut out rival North Penn-Mansfield 10-0 in six innings Thursday afternoon.
Mascho also walked two and struck out 6 to give the Hornets their 4th win in their last 7 games since starting the season off 0-4.
"Tonight was the most complete game we have played this season and it was a group effort," said head coach Kyle Smith. "Max was outstanding on the mound tonight and our defense played solid behind him. We were able to put the ball in play and get guys on base which allowed us to run the bases aggressively and put pressure on the defense. It is something we have been trying to do all season and tonight we were able to make it happen."
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd when the Hornets scored 3 runs. With two runners on sophomore Coen Tennis singled to left field. An errant throw allowed both seniors Alec Magli and Gabe Sprouse to score. Senior Dustin Owlett singled later in the inning to right to drive in Tennis.
Wellsboro added three more runs the following inning. A Magli base knock scored freshman Griffin Morral and Sprouse to make it 5-0, then a sac fly from junior Marek Mascho scored Magli to push the lead to 6-0.
The Hornets added 4 more runs in the sixth. A Marek Mascho single to third allowed Magli and Morral to score on the throw. Marek scored on a throw from right after another Tennis single before Tennis scored the game-ender after Owlett reached on a error.
Marek Mascho finished 2-for-3 and drove in 3 runs to lead the Hornets at the plate while Tennis, Owlett and freshman Gabe Cuneo were all 2-for-4. Morral was also 2-for-2 at the plate while Magli and senior Ryder Bowen added the remaining two hits of the Hornets' 12 in the game.
Easton Pequignot and Jason Harer had the Tigers' two hits in the game. Cooper Shaw was credited with the loss, going 3 innings and allowing 6 runs on 8 hits with 5 strikeouts. Pequignot pitched the final 2 & 1/3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits with a strikeout.
Wellsboro improves to 4-7 (4-5 NTL Large School Division) with the win. They host Coudersport tomorrow afternoon in non-league action.
