Sophomore Max Mascho threw a one-hit shutout in the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team's 1-0 win over Towanda on Thursday, May 1.
"We played a good baseball game tonight against a tough Towanda team who made us earn the run we were able to score," commented head coach Kyle Smith. "Max was dominant on the mound again tonight and Coen Tennis called a great game behind the plate."
The game was scoreless until the top of the 6th inning when the Hornets scored the game's only run. Freshman Gabe Cuneo led off the inning with a base hit, then stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd on a passed ball during Mascho's at bat. A sac fly from freshman Griffin Morral drove in Cuneo the next at bat.
"We are entering the home stretch of our season and we need to continue to do all the little things it takes to win," added Smith. "We scattered some hits around the park tonight, but struggled to push the runners across the plate. Thankfully we were able to score the one we needed."
Mascho threw 86 pitches to 22 batters on the evening, walking one and striking out 11.
Morral finished 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI while junior Marek Mascho was 3-for-4. Tennis and senior Ryder Bowen were both 2-for-4, Cuneo and Max Mascho were 1-for-3 and senior Alec Magli was 1-for-4.
Wellsboro pulls within one game of .500 for the year (6-7, 5-5 NTL Large School Division). They are back on the road this afternoon at Athens.
