By: Ed Weaver  /  April 23, 2025

The Troy Trojans scored 7 runs in the 1st two innings, then went on a late run to defeat Wellsboro 14-7 in NTL Varsity Baseball action on Tuesday, April 22.

The Trojans scored 6 runs in the 1st then added another run in the top of the 2nd to put the Hornets behind the eight ball early on. However, the Hornets rallied with 7 runs in two innings to tie the game up after the bottom of the 3rd.

Senior Ryder Bowen got things started in the top of the 2nd with a base knock. He later scored as sophomore Max Mascho singled on a pop up with the bases loaded. Freshman Griffin Morral then reached on an error the next at bat to score both Mascho and sophomore Syler Pietrzyk, cutting the lead down to 7-3. The Hornets' final two runs of the inning came as junior Marek Mascho singled to score his brother Max. Morral then scored on a base hit to left by sophomore Coen Tennis to bring the score to 7-5.

Wellsboro then tied the game up an inning later as Pietrzyk drew a walk and freshman Gabe Cuneo singled to put two on for senior Gabe Sprouse. Sprouse then doubled to center, scoring both Pietrzyk and Cuneo to tie everything up at 7-all.

Then the wheels fell off for the Hornets.

Troy put together a 3-run 4th inning to retake the lead, then added a run in the 5th and 3 more in the top of the 7th.

"Troy got off to a fast start and hit the ball hard," commented head coach Kyle Smith. "It was encouraging to respond and tie the game up. We need to be able to shut the door and keep adding runs to win games like tonight."

Bowen, Max Mascho and senior Alec Magli all went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Wellsboro while Sprouse, Marek Mascho, Tennis, Pietrzyk, and Cuneo made up the rest of the Hornets' 11 hits on the day. Sprouse and Morral both finished with 2 RBIs each and Pietrzyk and Cuneo each scored a pair of runs. Marek Mascho was handed the loss, allowing 10 runs (7 earned) on 9 hits with 3 walks and a strikeout. Junior Dylan Copp threw 3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 2 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Lincoln Chimics (2-for-3, 2 RBIs and 2 runs) and Brendan Gilliland (2-for-4, 1 RBI) led Troy on the afternoon. Frank Harper earned the win on the mound, throwing 5 & 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts.

The loss drops the Hornets to 3-7 overall and 3-5 in the NTL Large School Division. The team is back in action Thursday against rival North Penn-Mansfield.
