A 22-point second quarter and a 21-point fourth quarter led South Williamsport to a 52-34 season-opening win over the Wellsboro Girls Basketball team on Friday.
The Lady Hornets trailed 4-2 after the opening quarter, but were outscored 22-8 in the 2nd to trail 26-10 at the half. Wellsboro held the Lady Mounties to 9 points, while scoring 4, in the 3rd, but South posted 21 points over the final eight minutes for the win.
Wellsboro turned the ball over 39 times in the loss and shot 4-for-9 from the foul line.
Sophomore Kate Bryant led the Lady Hornets with 8 points, freshman Kya Lawton scored 7, senior Lily Wagner added 6, and sophomore Amelia Hulslander added 4.
Sophomore Adelyn Frantz chipped in with 3 points, junior Reese Regina and freshman Lena Rothermel and sophomore Lacie Brutsman all posted two points apiece.
Lawton added 3 assists and 5 steals, Frantz made 4 steals and blocked 3 shots, and Lawton pulled down 8 boards.
Frantz also pulled down 8 rebounds.
Wellsboro lost the JV game 38-24. Sophomore Aileen Bowers led Wellsboro with 10 points.
The Lady Hornets (0-1) travel to Addison on Monday.
