The Wellsboro Lady Hornet Soccer team scored a pair of second half goals to break a 1-1 halftime tie to knock off Jersey Shore 3-1 in non-league action Saturday morning.
"We came away with the win by matching the physicality, keeping our composure, making smart runs and recognizing how our opponent was playing," commented head coach Michael Reese. "The biggest factor was our defensive pressure, which set the tone for the match. A special mention goes to Carly Blackwell, who stepped up in goal after an injury sidelined Jadyn. To perform at that level with so little preparation is extraordinary, and I couldn’t be more proud of her team-first mentality."
Wellsboro struck first as junior Ella Boyce scored off a goal kick from sophomore Luna Moyer just over five and a half minutes into the game. The Lady 'Dawgs answered back with 8:37 remaining to knot the game at 1-all.
The Lady Hornets then turned up the heat in the second half. With 24:52 remaining in the game Moyer struck to break the tie and put Wellsboro up for good off an assist from freshman Haylie Smith. Smith later scored with 8:33 left off an assist from junior Megan Newruck to pad the lead.
Wellsboro took 8 shots to Jersey Shore's 11.
Sophomore Carly Blackwell made 9 saves in goal.
The JV game ended in a 0-0 draw.
