Lady Hornets Give Troy Everything They Can Handle In 46-34 Loss

For three quarters the Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team played their best basketball of the season, giving Troy all they could handle in a 46-34 loss on Tuesday.

The Lady Hornets led 13-9 after the opening quarter and 21-17 at halftime, however Troy began digging their way back in the 2nd half. A 14-9 run in the 3rd gave Troy a 31-30 lead heading into the 4th quarter. Troy then outscored Wellsboro 15-4 over the final eight minutes to win their 13th straight.

Giana Renzi led all scorers with 16 points on the night.

Seniors Chloe Brandenburg and Paige Logsdon both finished in double figures on the evening, scoring 13 and 12 points, respectively. Freshman Adelyn Frantz finished with 7 points and freshman Teagan Novinger rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

Logsdon added 9 rebounds, 2 steals and blocked a shot, Novinger had 7 rebounds and 3 assists, and Brandenburg pulled down 6 rebounds and a steal.

"The girls showed up to play Troy at home. I am so proud of this team," head coach Maureen Poirier said. "They executed our game plan. The girls were strong with the ball, confident, patient, and aggressive tonight. They did not allow Troy to intimate them on our home court. Every player played with heart and desire tonight while having fun."

Troy beat Wellsboro 43-25 in the JV game to wrap up Wellsboro's JV season with a 6-10 record. Sophomore Bri Stocum scored 6 points in the game to lead Wellsboro while freshmen Madison Nagy and Amelia Hulslander added 4 points each.

The loss drops Wellsboro to 5-15 overall and 2-14 in the NTL Large School Division. The team hosts Sayre for Senior Night, and their final game of the season, tonight at 5:00 p.m.
