The Wellsboro Girls Wrestling team brought home a 4th place finish at the Lady Phoenix Christmas Classic, hosted by Sugar Valley Rural Charter, on Saturday.
The Lady Hornets scored 77 team points, finishing just behind Muncy (81) and ahead of Jersey Shore (73). Southern Huntingdon won the tournament with 125 team points.
Freshman Riley Kilburn won her 1st round consolation match, defeating Mechanicsburg's Athena Peslis with a 1:30 pin. She later defeated Southern Huntingdon's Emily Ryan (2:51) pin before falling to Shamokin's Marion Ulrich by tech fall (20-4, 2:58) to finish 4th at 170 lbs.
Sophomore Katie Whitney also finished 4th overall on the day at 136 lbs. She started her day with a 3:59 pin against Muncy's Lillian Kramer in the quarterfinals before falling to Bellwood-Antis' Izzy Sweet (29 second pin) in the semi-finals. Whitney again faced off with Muncy's Kramer for 3rd, falling in a 3:30 pin.
Three Lady Hornets also competed for championships on the day. Senior Jordan Rumsey (106 lbs.) and freshman Phoebe Bowen (190 lbs.) both brought home 2nd place finished while sophomore Isla Twoey won (100 lbs.).
Twoey started off with a 34 second pin over Benton's Makenna Wharton in the quarterfinals, then beat Southern Huntingdon's Lilah Fleming by fall in two minutes. Twoey claimed her 1st place finish with a 1:20 pin against Ariana Mayes from Bald Eagle Area.
Rumsey won her semi-final match against Southern Huntingdon's Rylin Newman in 43 seconds before falling to Bellwood's Juliette Cuevas in 3:15.
Bowen won her quarterfinal match over Muncy's Piper Diehl in 1:28, then defeated Shamokin's Kara Popiel in 17 seconds. She finished 2nd after a 1:21 pin fall loss to Central Mountain's Kendall Wagner.
Sophomore Rosa Sguera went 2-2 on the day, falling to Jersey Shore's Jazzlyn Jolin in 1:12. She then won back-to-back matches, one against BEA's Cami Walker (2:37 pin) and fellow Lady Hornet, senior Kodi Passmore (3:00 pin). She then fell to SH's Hailee Bowman in 1:13.
Passmore and sophomore Zoey Roosa went 0-2 on the day. Roosa fell to Jersey Shore's Carsyn Sobiech (3:41 pin) and Bellefonte's Victoria Schellenberg (0:45 pin) while Passmore also fell to Mechanicsburg's Sophia Peslis in 31 seconds in her quarterfinal match.
The team is back in action Monday night for their first dual match at Towanda.
