Wellsboro's second-half rally came up short as Williamson converted a penalty kick to break a 3-3 tie late in the game to defeated the Lady Hornets 4-3 on Saturday.
"Our girls showed incredible heart tonight. To battle back from a 3-1 deficit and push it to the wire shows the kind of team we are becoming," head coach Michael Reese commented. "We may have lost on a PK, but the fight, belief and pressure we applied is something we can build on."
Williamson scored once in the first half then added another goal 11 minutes into the 2nd half to go up 2-0 over the Lady Hornets. Wellsboro's offense finally started clicking as freshman Haylie Smith scored off an assist from senior Emily Benjamin to cut the lead in half midway through the period. Williamson added their third goal of the game two and half minutes later to push the lead back to two goals.
That's when Wellsboro started their rally.
With 11:51 left to play sophomore Kate Bryant struck unassisted to cut the lead back down to one, then with 8:20 to go, junior Ella Boyce converted a pass from sophomore Luna Moyer to knot the game up at 3-all.
Williamson then made their penalty kick with 7:44 left in the game and prevented the Lady Hornets from scoring.
Williamson out shot Wellsboro 17-7 while Wellsboro had an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior Jadyn Dunlap made 13 saves in goal.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 6-4 (5-3 NTL). The team is back in action at Northeast Bradford on Tuesday.
