The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team dropped their second game in a row, falling 44-27 to rival North Penn-Mansfield on the road Friday.
The game was close early on as the Lady Tigers led the Lady Hornets 8-4 after the opening quarter and 14-8 at the half, however a 19-11 run to start the second half gave North Penn-Mansfield a 33-19 lead heading into the fourth quarter, which Wellsboro never recovered from.
North Penn-Mansfield outscored Wellsboro 11-6 over the final eight minutes.
Sophomore Kate Bryant led Wellsboro with 8 points, senior Lily Wagner finished with 7, and freshman Kya Lawton and sophomores Adelyn Frantz and Amelia Hulslander all finished with 4 points apiece.
Wellsboro shot 2-for-8 (.250) from the foul line.
Maddie McNamara (16) and Kameron Lightener (14) led North Penn-Mansfield on the evening.
"The Lady Hornets played four physical quarters of basketball," head coach Maureen Poirier said. "They executed the game plan while playing the best basketball of the season. Kameron Lightner scored 14 points on the night, but she had to work hard for those points. The team came up short; however, they had so many little wins tonight as a team."
North Penn-Mansfield won the JV game 33-18, dropping the team to 2-3 on the season. Sophomore Jennifer Belz led the team with 10 points, freshman Lena Rothermel added 6 and freshman Shayla Hamblin chipped in two.
The loss in the Varsity game drops the Lady Hornets to 1-4 (1-2 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action Monday at home against Williamson.
