The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team shook off a slow start to defeat Sayre 46-17 in their regular season finale on Wednesday, February 12.
Neither team scored until roughly midway through the opening quarter, but after the first eight minutes the Lady Hornets held a 9-4 lead and never looked back. Wellsboro then went on an 11-6 run in the 2nd to build a 20-10 lead at the half, then held Sayre to just 3 points in the 3rd to further increase their lead to 28-13.
Wellsboro saved their best quarter for last as they outscored Sayre 18-4.
"To finish off our season, it was nice seeing every girl on the team play tonight and score," head coach Maureen Poirier said. "Chloe and Paige will be missed but the future is bright for WHS."
Seniors Paige Logsdon and Chloe Brandenburg both finished in double digits in scoring in their last career game, finishing with 14 points and 11 points, respectively. Freshman Teagan Novinger added 6 points, freshman Kate Bryant scored 5 off the bench, freshman Rylee Coolidge chipped in with 4 points, and freshman Adelyn Frantz and juniors Lily Wagner and Sophia Yoder all added 2 points apiece.
The Lady Hornets erase a six-game losing skid with the win, improving to 6-15 (2-14 NTL Large School Division) on the season.
