The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team suffered their first loss of the season, falling 2-nil to Athens at home on Tuesday, September 2.

The Wildcats snapped their six-game losing skid to the Hornets, dating back to September 2022.

"We struggled all match to get the ball to our attacking third and Athens defense was solid, taking away any opportunities that did develop," said head coach Todd Fitch. "Tonight they were just better than us."

After a scoreless first half the Wildcats finally found the back of the net just under ten minutes in as Kamdyn Wheeler took a pass from Patrick Umber and sent it past senior Camden Tom. Wellsboro had a chance to tie the game up with 11:08 remaining on a penalty kick attempt from junior Mason Brill, but both the shot and rebound were deflected away from the goal to keep Athens in front.

The Wildcats added a late goal on a Chase Gombocz penalty kick to make it 2-nil.

Athens out shot Wellsboro 8-2 but Wellsboro had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Tom made 5 saves in goal for Wellsboro while Zachary Fisher made 1 save for Athens.

Wellsboro split the evening, winning the JV game 5-1. Freshman Liam Stevens scored a pair of goals while sophomore Xavier Lecker, junior Kayden Pearson, and freshman Daniel Taboada scored individual goals. Sophomore Brayden Benjamin assisted on Stevens' second goal and Stevens assisted on Taboada's goal.

Wellsboro (3-1, 1-1 NTL) travel to North Penn-Liberty Thursday.
