The Wellsboro Boys Basketball team erased a two-game losing streak by rallying in the fourth quarter to edge Hughesville in a non-league game, 46-41, Saturday.
"Nice team win. We got points from a lot of guys tonight which we love to see," head coach Ron Doughtie said following the win. "We showed some mental toughness in coming back at the end of the game to win it with some good defensive stops and timely points."
The Hornets started out by doubling up the Spartans 8-4 after the first quarter. Hughesville edged the Hornets 14-13 in the second to cut the lead down to 21-18 at the break. The Spartans again outscored Wellsboro in the 3rd, 15-11, to take a one-point, 33-32, lead heading into the final frame.
Wellsboro went on a 14-8 run over the final eight minutes to secure their first win of the 2025 season.
Senior Jonathan Carl led the Hornets with 10 points while seniors Marek Mascho and Luke Rothermel added 9 and 8 points, respectively. Junior Gideon Lawton added 7 points, junior Colin Fletcher and sophomore Ransom Schultz added 4 points each, and junior Ethan Keane and sophomore Griffin Morral chipped in two points apiece.
Rothermel pulled down 8 board while Carl added 7. Rothermel also added 4 assists and 4 steals. Mascho made 7 steals in the game and Carl added 1 steal and blocked a shot.
Wellsboro shot 12-of-19 from the foul line and had 11 fouls
Hughesville shot 2-of-4 from the line and had 14 personal fouls. Gavin Knarr (16) and Alex Schultz (13) led the Spartans on the night.
Wellsboro swept the evening, winning the JV game 53-33. Freshman James Doughtie (13) and sophomore Kody Enck (11) led the way for the young Hornets.
The Hornets improve to 1-2 (0-1 NTL Large School Division) following the win. The team is back in action at Sayre on Tuesday.
