The Troy Trojans snapped Wellsboro's three-game win streak in a 71-54 win over the Hornets in an NTL Large School Division match up on Tuesday, January 14.
The Hornets hung with the division-leading Trojans through the first half, trailing 16-13 after the 1st quarter and 32-27 at the half.
Troy, however, began to slowly pull away in the 3rd quarter as they outscored Wellsboro 19-14 to lead 51-41 entering the final quarter. The Trojans then outscored the Hornets 20-13 down the stretch.
Three Hornets scored in double figures on the evening, led by sophomore Colin Fletcher's 16 points. Senior Mitchel Lechler added 13 and junior Luke Rothermel chipped in 11. Junior Marek Mascho added 6 points and junior Jonathan Carl and sophomore Max Mascho rounded out the scoring with 4 points each.
Rothermel led the team with 8 boards, Lechler pulled down 7 rebounds, Max Mascho made 5 assists and grabbed 3 rebounds, Marek Mascho had 3 assists and 3 rebounds, and Fletcher made 2 assists, grabbed 2 rebounds and blocked a shot.
Evan Woodward led all scorers with 21 points to lead Troy while Trey Teribury added 17 and Lincoln Chimics chipped in 13.
Wellsboro won the JV game 42-39 behind 17 points from freshman Ransom Schultz and 11 from freshman Kody Enck. The JV team in now 7-5 on the season and have won 3 of their last 4 games.
The Varsity loss drops the Hornets to 6-6 overall and 5-3 in the NTL Large School Division. The team is back on the court Thursday at Athens.
