Hornets Drop Non-League Road Content To Hughesville

The Wellsboro Boys Basketball team fell 69-51in a non-league road game to Hughesville on Monday, January 20.

Wellsboro held an early 13-11 lead after the opening quarter but were outscored 15-11 in the second and trailed 26-24 at halftime. The Spartans then began to distance themselves from the Hornets with a 22-point third quarter to open up a 48-36 lead heading into the fourth.

Hughesville then outscored Wellsboro 21-15 over the final eight minutes.

Three Hornets scored in double-digits on the evening, led by junior Luke Rothermel with 12 points. Senior Mitchel Lechler and sophomore Colin Fletcher added 10 points each, junior Jonathan Carl and sophomore Max Mascho added 6 points apiece, junior Marek Mascho chipped in 5 points, and sophomore Gideon Lawton rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

Rothermel added 6 rebounds and 3 steals, Max Mascho grabbed 5 boards, Marek Mascho dished out 5 assists and made 3 steals, and Lechler added 4 rebounds and a pair of assists and steals.

Alex Schultz led all scorers with 22 points and Gavin Knarr added 18 for the Spartans.

In the JV game the Hornets edged Hughesville 41-38 to improve to 8-6 on the season. Freshman Ransom Schultz scored a game-high 17 points to lead Wellsboro.

The loss drops the Hornets to 7-7 (6-3 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action Wednesday against North Penn-Liberty.
