The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team 10-runned Wyalusing 12-2 in 6 innings on Tuesday, April 1, thanks to an 8-run 6th inning.
"Nice win on the road tonight," head coach Kyle Smith said. "Gabe Sprouse had another quality start on the mound and the lineup produced throughout the game. Encouraging to see guys on the bases all night and overall we played solid defense."
Wellsboro took the early lead in their first at bat as junior Marek Mascho singled to score Sprouse after he led off the inning with a walk.
The Rams then answered in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game up at 1-all. The score remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the 3rd when the Hornets plated two more runs.
After back-to-back base hits by Sprouse and senior Alec Magli to start the inning, Mascho hit a sac fly to center to score Sprouse, breaking the tie and putting the Hornets up, 2-1. Magli scored two at bats later on a single by senior Ryder Bowen, giving Wellsboro a 3-1 lead. Wellsboro added one more run in the 4th on a ground ball RBI by sohomore Max Mascho to score freshman Griffin Morral.
Then, in the top of the 6th, the flood gates opened up for Wellsboro's offense.
Sprouse was hit by a pitch while leading off the 6th, then scored the very next at bat as Magli drove him home on a base hit to left. Following a double by Marek Mascho, sophomore Coen Tennis singled to right to score both Magli and Mascho to push the lead to 7-1. Bowen then doubled in the next at bat to score Tennis, making it 8-1. With two outs junior Cameron Owlett scored on a wild pitch, then Magli doubled to left to score Sprouse, Marek Mascho and sophomore Syler Pietrzyk, making it 12-1.
The Rams got one run back in the bottom half of the inning.
Magli led all Hornet batters at the plate, going 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs. Bowen finished 2-for-3 with a walk and 2 RBIs, and Marek Mascho was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Tennis, Owlett, freshman Gabe Cuneo and Max Mascho all added one hit each. Wellsboro had 11 in total.
Sprouse threw a complete game from the mound, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on just 1 hit with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.
Kenny Mapes had the Rams' lone hit in the game and drove in one of their runs.
The win improves the Hornets to 2-5 (2-3 NTL Large School Division). The team host Addison (NY) on Saturday morning.
