The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team produced 13 runs in the first three innings to defeat Canton 18-5 on Thursday, May 8.
"We got off to a fast start which allowed us to settle into the game defensively," head coach Kyle Smith said. "Max Mascho gave us a solid start and Dylan Copp has been steady all season as a defensive specialist and pitcher. He came in and did exactly what we needed on the mound. We still have some important games ahead of us which is exactly what you want this time of year."
The Hornets scored 7 runs in the 1st, 5 in the 2nd and one in the 3rd to jump out to the early lead. Canton scored three runs in the bottom of the 3rd to make it a 10-run game, however the Hornets added 5 more runs, one in the 5th and 4 in the top of the 7th to the Warriors' two in the bottom of the 5th to secure the win.
Max Mascho, sophomore Coen Tennis, and senior Ryder Bowen all went 2-for-3 at the plate. Junior Marek Mascho was 3-for-6, and seniors Gabe Sprouse and Dustin Owlett had one hit each. Marek Mascho, Bowen and Owlett scored 3 runs each, Tennis and freshman Gabe Cuneo scored twice on the day, and senior Alec Magli and junior Cameron Owlett scored solo runs.
Max Mascho pitched 4 & 1/3 innings to earn the win. He allowed 5 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits with 5 strikeouts. Copp threw the remaining 2 & 2/3 innings, allowing 2 hits to go along with 2 strikeouts.
Wellsboro (7-8, 6-5 NTL Large School Division) hosts Wyalusing this afternoon.
