The Wellsboro Boys Soccer team needed extra time, but found a way to defeat Troy, 3-2 in double overtime, Thursday evening.
"We had 20 shots and 14 corner kicks, but struggled to get the ball across the goal line," said head coach Todd Fitch. "I'm proud of the grit and resilience the boys showed coming from behind twice and pressing to get the game winner in the final minutes of double overtime."
Wellsboro found themselves trailing early as the Trojans scored with 26:44 remaining, but evened the score at 1-all as senior onathan Carl scored with three minutes left in the half. Senior Jacoby Strang assisted on the goal.
Again the Trojans scored early in the second half to retake the lead. Wellsboro again tied things up, this time near the midpoint of the half, as Carl struck for the second time, unassisted. Neither team scored the rest of the half, forcing overtime, and after 10 extra minutes, double overtime ensued.
Carl completed his hat trick with the game-winning goal coming with just over a minute left to play.
Wellsboro out shot Troy 20-3 and had a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks.
There was no JV game.
Wellsboro improves to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the NTL. The team is back in action Saturday morning at Towanda.
