Athens Jumps Out Quick In Win Over Wellsboro

The Athens Lady Wildcats went on a 37-12 first half run over the Wellsboro Lady Hornets to hand them a 54-35 loss on Friday, January 17.

"We didn't show up to play until the second half," head coach Maureen Poirier said. "We need to come out from the start and play basketball like we did in the second half."

Wellsboro was held to just four made shot attempts from the floor. Athens, on the other hand, hit 16 shots. The Lady Wildcats scored 19 points in the first quarter and added 18 in the second.

Wellsboro outscored Athens 12-6 to cut the Lady Wildcat's lead down to 43-24 after the third. Both teams then scored 11 points in the fourth.

Senior Chloe Brandenburg led Wellsboro with 13 points and freshman Teagan Novinger added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Adelyn Frantz added 4 points and senior Paige Logsdon, junior Lily Wagner, and freshman Rylee Coolidge all chipped in two points apiece.

Brandenburg pulled down 5 rebounds and made 4 steals, Frantz had 5 boards, and Logsdon had 5 rebounds and blocked a shot.

Allie Kemp and Addy Wheeler scored 15 points for Athens.

In the JV game Wellsboro pulled out a 20-16 win over Athens for their second win of the season. Kate Bryant had 8 points in the win.

Wellsboro (4-7, 2-6 NTL Large School Division) travels to North Penn-Liberty Tuesday.
