Wellsboro's Junior High Soccer team edged Athens 3-2 on Saturday, September 21 to rebound from their first loss of the season.
"We had a number of opportunities by way of our team movement and excellent pressure," commented head coach Derek Stevens. "It was great to see our players being tested and coming out on top giving everything they had."
With 3:36 left in the first half Callen Novak scored from a Daniel Toboada pass to put Wellsboro up. Athens scored to tie the game with 10:25 remaining in the game, however it didn't last as Liam Stevens dribbled through the Wildcats' defense and scored 15 seconds later to put the Hornets back in front.
Athens, however, battled back and scored from 18 yards out with 3:52 remaining, knotting the game back up at 2-all. Then, with 30 seconds remaining, James Doughtie found the back of the net for the game-winner, off a Stevens corner kick.
Wellsboro took 17 shots on goal and held the Wildcats to just 3 shot attempts.
Wellsboro (5-1) takes on Towanda Tuesday afternoon.
