The Wellsboro Girls Basketball team was edged 28-25 by Large School Division foe Williamson on Friday, February 3.
The Lady Hornets suffered the three-point loss despite being held scoreless in the 2nd quarter.
"We gave a really good Williamson team all they could handle, but 35 turnovers cost us opportunities to score, said head coach Darrell Morris. "Williamson does a great job getting in the passing lanes and getting steals, but we also made some bad decisions with our passes. It is a tough loss because our girls fought so hard for 32 minutes and were right there."
Wellsboro held a 9-5 lead over the Lady Warriors, thanks to a great defensive effort in allowing just one field goal, but were outscored 6-0 in the 2nd half and trailed 11-9 heading into the half. Both teams scored 8 points each in the 3rd quarter and Williamson outscored Wellsboro 9-8 down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Junior Chloe Brandenburg led all scorers with 16 points while junior Paige Logsdon added 5 and senior Emily Morris scored 4. Brandenburg came one one rebound shy of a double-double, senior Maddy Mascho grabbed 5 boards and made 4 assists, senior Emily Richardson had 7 rebounds, and Logsdon grabbed 12 rebounds. Morris also blocked three shots.
In the JV game Wellsboro edged Williamson 15-13 for their 4th straight win. Freshman Elizabeth Ferero led all scroers with 8 points, sophomore Lily Wagner added 5 and senior Hannah Gilmour chipped in two points.
The loss drops Wellsboro to 8-10 (6-8 NTL Large School Division). The team returns to the court Monday at Cowanesque Valley.
