North Penn-Mansfield took the series lead in the Margaret (Peg) Berguson Memorial Trophy Game rivalry as they defeated Wellsboro 63-33 on Thursday, December 19.
Early on the game was close as the Tigers had a 19-13 lead after the opening eight minutes of play, however they pulled away from Wellsboro by outscoring the Hornets 35-13 in the middle quarters. North Penn-Mansfield went on a 19-7 run before halftime to lead 38-20 at the break, then padded their lead to 54-26 after three quarters of action by outscoring Wellsboro 16-6.
Wellsboro held North Penn-Mansfield to just 9 points in the 4th quarter, however the Tigers' damage in the 2nd and 3rd was too much to overcome.
In total, Wellsboro turned the ball over 21 times.
Junior Jonathan Carl led Wellsboro with 9 points, 10 rebounds and 5 steals while senior Mitchel Lechler scored 8 points. Junior Luke Rothermel added 5 points and 3 boards, sophomore Colin Fletcher chipped in 4 points, junior Marek Mascho finished with 3 points, and freshman Griffin Morral and sophomore Max Mascho had 2 points each.
Morral also dished out 4 assists.
Alex Davis (16), Cooper Shaw (13) and Brady Stetter (10) led North Penn-Mansfield on the evening.
"They are a well coached team, we struggled with their size and strength and the pressure defense," head coach Ron Doughtie said. "We need to keep looking to improve our ability to handle other teams pressure defense."
Wellsboro won the JV game, 52-35, behind 14 points from freshman Ransom Schultz, 12 from Fletcher, and 11 from sophomore Gideon Lawton.
Wellsboro (2-3, 2-2 NTL Large School Division) travels to Montoursville for a non-league game Saturday evening.
