Wellsboro ended a five-game losing streak as they defeated Sayre 41-18 on Monday, January 15.
The Lady Hornets held a slim 7-6 lead after the opening quarter and outscored the Lady Redskins 9-5 in the 2nd quarter to lead 16-11. However, the team got off to a fast start in the 3rd quarter and held Sayre scoreless while padding their lead to 25-11. Wellsboro went on a 16-7 run in the 4th quarter to close out the win.
Junior Chloe Brandenburg led all scorers with 17 points while senior Maddy Mascho and junior Paige Logsdon added 8 points each. Senior Emily Morris scored 4 points, sophomore Lily Wagner added 2 points, and seniors Emily Richardson and Hannah Gilmour rounded out the scoring with one point apiece.
Abbie McGaughey scored 12 of the Lady Redskins' 18 points.
"We were a little slow out of the gate offensively, but our girls really played great defense all 4 quarters," said head coach Darrell Morris. "Maddy and Emily (Morris) really locked down their two leading scorers, and Paige dominated the middle of the paint. Chloe found her shot for ten points in the 4th, and 7 of our 8 girls got in the scorebook. It was a solid team win."
Wellsboro won the JV game 12-8. Wagner scored 5 points to lead the team while freshman Elizabeth Ferero added 3.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 4-7 (2-6 NTL Large School Division). The team hosts Canton Wednesday night.
