Despite outscoring rival North Penn-Mansfield 15-13 in the second half, the Lady Tigers defeated their rival Lady Hornets 30-22 to split the season series on Saturday, January 6.
North Penn-Mansfield took an 11-7 lead after the opening quarter then held Wellsboro scoreless in the 2nd to lead 17-7 at the half. Wellsboro flipped the script to open the third as they held the Lady Tigers to just one point while scoring 6, to cut the lead down to 18-13 heading into the final quarter.
North Penn-Mansfield outscored Wellsboro 12-9 down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Juniors Chloe Brandenburg and Paige Logsdon led Wellsboro with 8 points apiece, senior Emily Richardson scored 4 and senior Emily Morris added 2 points. Logdson pulled down 8 rebounds, Brandenburg made 5 steals, and senior Maddy Mascho had 3 assists.
Kameron Lightner had a double-double, scoring a game-high 13 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, to lead North Penn-Mansfield while Elaina Shaw added 7 points.
In the JV game North Penn-Mansfield edged the Lady Hornets, 16-15. Freshman Elizabeth Ferero had 9 points for Wellsboro.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the NTL Large School Division standings. The team is back in action against Troy on Tuesday.
