The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Soccer team scored a late first-half goal, then added three more in the second half, to shut out rival North Penn-Mansfield 4-0 on Thursday, August 29 for their first win of the season.
With 8:47 left in the opening half, freshman Luna Moyer scored unassisted to put the Lady Hornets up 1-0. Later in the second, senior Cassidy Mitchell scored back-to-back goals, the first with 34:24 remaining off a direct kick. She struck just under a minute later from 20 yards out, pushing Wellsboro's lead to 3-0.
The Lady Hornets final goal came a minute later from senior Annie Gehman, assisted by freshman Kate Bryant.
Wellsboro out shot Mansfield 16-3 on the afternoon. Mansfield held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Jadyn Dunlap recorded her first shut out of the season in goal with 3 saves.
"After one of the best matches I've ever seen our Wellsboro girls team play against Athens, we continued to focus on the work we are doing to become a great competitor on the pitch - and it paid off against North Penn-Mansfield," head coach Jason Gehman said. "The ladies are working hard to show up the way we intend to show up: good, hard, clean soccer - respecting all opponents and respecting ourselves."
Wellsboro also shut out Mansfield 2-0 in the JV game to pick up their first win. Freshman Piper Perry scored just under the mid-way point in the first half then Rosa Sguera struck with 4:45 remaining in the game to make it 2-0.
Wellsboro (1-1, 1-1 NTL) travels to Troy on Wednesday, September 4.
