The Wellsboro Junior High Basketball teams dropped a pair of games on the road at Towanda on Saturday, January 14.
In the girls game Wellsboro lost a very tight game to Towanda, 28-24. The teams were tied 13-13 at half and Wellsboro ended the 3rd quarter up by two, 19-17. They remained neck-and-neck for most of the 4th quarter before Towanda pulled away in the last minute of the game. Lauren Gehman had 5 steals and was the high scorer with 8 points. She was followed by Teagan Novinger with 7 points and Ady Frantz with 4 points. Kate Bryant and Peyton Keane added 2 points each and Kya Lawton chipped in 1.
The B team also lost 20-10. Aileen Bowers, Rosa Sguera, Hailee Smith, Paityn Biery and Delaney Morral all scored 2 points each.
In the boys game Wellsboro held an 8-5 lead after the first quarter, but Towanda outscored the Hornets 14-5 in the 2nd to take a 19-13 lead at the half. Wellsboro closed the gap with an 11-8 3rd quarter, cutting the lead to 27-24 to start the 4th, however Towanda went on a 9-4 run in the final six minutes to secure the win.
Ransom Schultz led the Hornets with 12 points, Luke Szentesy added 10, Griffin Morral scored 4, and RJ Doughtie chipped in two points.
Wellsboro won the B game 28-15. Tucker Bencus had 10 points, Keegan VanZile added 8, Maddon Mascho scored 4, and Connor Hartman, Blake Knowlton, and Braylen Jessup added 2 points apiece.
The Hornets close out their season next Friday at home against Wyalusing.
