The Wellsboro Junior High Soccer team kicked off the 2024 season with a 7-1 win over Troy on Monday, August 26.
"We had a very strong start right from the whistle especially from Gage (Baltzley)," said head coach Derek Stevens. "We played well but once Troy settled in we started to see areas we need to tighten up during practice this week."
One minute and 40 seconds into the game Liam Stevens put a through pass from the left side of the field over to Gage Baltzley for the game's first goal. Not even a minute later Baltzley collected a ball off from a Troy defender miss touch to put another goal on the board, making it 2-0. Another minute and 20 seconds later James Doughtie flicked the ball over the defense for Baltzley's third goal of the half.
Baltzley scored his fourth goal off a goalie bobble two minutes later, then added his fifth goal of the half in the 23rd minute off an assist from Haylie Smith.
The Hornets added their sixth goal of the first half with under a minute to go on a Smith goal assisted by Owen Miller.
Wellsboro's final goal came in the second half on a header by Braeden Cleveland off a Daniel Taboada corner kick.
Wellsboro (1-0) is back on the field on Friday, September 6 against Galeton.
