The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team split a doubleheader with Wyalusing on Friday, May 3.
Wellsboro won game one, a make up from April 14, 6-3 then lost the second, 4-2.
"Overall, earning a split with Wyalusing is good, especially because they are playing really well right now and have been hitting so well lately," commented head coach Kyle Smith. "We did get a few timely hits today which was nice, but it's not a secret that we are struggling to string hits together. We will continue to work on that part of our game."
The Hornets took the early lead in the first game with a run in the 1st inning and then 3 runs in the second. In the 1st, sophomore Marek Mascho singled with one out then later scored as junior Alec Magli connected on a base hit. In the 2nd, sophomore Drayden McGee drew a two-out walk, followed by senior Caden Smith reaching on an error. Mascho connected on his second straight base hit to score McGee, then junior Gabe Sprouse singled to score both Smith and Mascho.
Wyalusing got one run back in the 3rd, but the Hornets increased their lead later in the 5th.
Mascho reached on an error to lead off the inning then later scored on a passed ball. Sprouse was it by a pitch and also crossed home plate.
Wyalusing scored twice more in the 6th, but Wellsboro's defense prevented any further bleeding.
Magli led Wellsboro at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Sprouse finished 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, Mascho was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and junior Lucas Cuneo was 1-for-4.
Mascho threw a complete game, scattering 6 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts to earn the win.
Game two was scoreless until the Rams' Clayton Carr crossed home plate in the top of the 3rd, putting Wyalusing up 1-0. The score remained in favor of the Rams until the Hornets rallied in the 6th. Smith led off the bottom of the 6th for Wellsboro, reaching base by being hit with a pitch. Mascho doubled in the next at bat, putting two runners on for Sprouse. Sprouse hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Smith, tying the game. Next at bat, freshman Coen Tennis doubled to score Mascho, putting the Hornets in front, 2-1.
The Rams scored three times in the top of the 7th on a three-run home run by Kenny Mapes.
Smith threw a complete game, giving up 4 runs on 9 hits with a walk and a strikeout.
"Our pitchers have continued to throw strikes and keep us in games," continued Smith. "We are really happy with the effort from that aspect of the game and our defense played remarkably well today, especially the three outfielders who cover a lot of ground."
Wellsboro is now 5-9 (4-7 NTL Large School Division) on the year, and travels to Hughesville for a non-league game on Monday.
