The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team scored 3 first-period goals, then added 5 more in the second, to cruise to an 8-2 victory over Troy on Thursday, September 12.
There was no JV game.
"We haven't been as crisp in our two games this week, but the boys are getting pressure on the ball, creating goal scoring opportunities, and continuing to adapt to a playing surface away from home," said head coach Todd Fitch. "We're looking forward to getting back home on our field next weekend."
Senior Lucas Cuneo put the Hornets up early, not even three minutes into the contest, on an unassisted goal. Exactly two minutes later junior David Seeling took a pass from junior Jude Cuneo and converted the goal, giving Wellsboro a 2-0 lead. With 21:20 left in the opening period, senior Jack Bryant scored off another pass from Jude Cuneo, to put the Hornets in front 3-0 before Troy's Landon Jenkins struck with just over 5 minutes remaining to make it 3-1.
Both teams scored midway through the second period, first with a goal by senior Alex Citrino with 23:21 remaining, followed by Jenkins' second goal for the Trojans with 20:11 to go. Wellsboro then turned up the heat and scored four more goals. Senior Micaiah Fitch scored three straight goals. Seeling and Lucas Cuneo added assists on Fitch's final two goals. Senior Micah Vickery added the game's final goal on a penalty kick with 4 seconds remaining.
Wellsboro out shot Troy 21-4 on the afternoon and had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior Camden Tom made two saves in goal.
Wellsboro improves to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the NTL. The team is back in action for a JV only game with New Covenant Academy this afternoon before returning to full play next Wednesday at Northeast Bradford.
